Some immigration questions involve safety, family relationships, or a young person’s care. This overview introduces VAWA and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) with care and respect. Every situation is different, and not everyone qualifies.
01 · VAWA
VAWA immigration protections may be available to eligible spouses and children of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, as well as certain parents of U.S. citizens. Despite its name, these protections may apply to eligible individuals of any gender.

02 · SIJS
Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) may be a possible classification for certain young people who cannot reunify with one or both parents because of abuse, neglect, abandonment, or similar grounds under state law.
Whether a young person may qualify depends on individual circumstances and applicable law. Factors include age and marital status, a qualifying juvenile-court order, findings about reunification with one or both parents, and a determination that it is in the young person’s best interest to remain in the United States.
The process generally includes a state-court stage and a USCIS Form I-360 petition. Adjustment of status may be pursued only when the person is eligible and a visa is available. Strict age and court-jurisdiction limits can apply, so early, individualized legal review is important.
